Though an author does not need an email list, sales may be much higher with one. Often, an email list is an author's most effective marketing tool.
Theoretically, yes, you can create your own list. However, unless you have experience with email-marketing platforms, you may find some of the configuration aspects challenging.

A landing page is a promotional page encouraging people to sign up for your email list. It will have a headline and supporting text, an image, and an input box for people to enter their email addresses.
Typically, landing pages feature a digital item an author gives away in exchange for an email address (known as a "reader magnet"). For example, a short story or a preview chapter from an upcoming book.
If you happen to have an item to give away, we'll promote it on your landing page. If you don't have an item to give away, that's okay - we can still find a way to encourage people to sign up for your list.
Your landing page will have its own URL, which you can post online to grow your list.
As people sign up for your list, you'll be able to send them messages from your account on the email-marketing platform. You can send two major types of messages:
(1) Broadcast. These are messages that go out to your entire list, or a segment of it, on a specific date. For example, if you have an announcement to make about an upcoming release, you can schedule a broadcast to go out to your entire list on a certain date.
(2) Automated. These are messages that go out to subscribers based on a condition you input, usually involving the number of days since they signed up. For example, you can create an automated email about your latest book to go out to all new subscribers two weeks after they join your list.
No. If you happen to already have an author website, you should add a link to the new landing page we'll create for you.
If you don't have an author website, we will still create you a landing page, which will have its own URL. You can share this URL on social media to get new email subscribers.

(1) An account on a powerful email-marketing platform. You can log in at any time to send broadcast or automated messages to your email-list subscribers.
(2) A landing page that will encourage people to sign up for your email list. It will have its own URL, which you can post online - ex, on your social-media pages - to grow your list.
(3) An automated email that will go out to subscribers immediately after they join your list. If you happen to be offering a free digital item to new subscribers, we'll assure people can easily download it from this email.

This account is initially free, however, once you reach 1,000 subscribers, you'll begin to be charged, monthly. The cost is low, and only increase if your subscriber count does. To get an exact cost for a certain subscriber level, please send us an email with the details.
Also, we recommend you send emails from an address on a dedicated domain (ex, "your name" followed by ".com"). If you already have an author website, you likely already have an email address on its domain. If you don't yet own an author domain, we suggest you buy one.

You have four main options for getting an author email list:
1.) Doing it yourself. This can eat up a lot of your time. Plus, unless you have experience with email-marketing platforms, you likely won't be as effective as a professional.
2.) Hiring a freelancer. Though many good freelancers are out there, plenty of them overpromise and under-deliver. Knowing whether or not you're choosing an effective one can be hard. Plus, if you go with a freelancer, you'll have to spend time managing the project.
3.) Working with another company that provides email-list services. Though other companies provide email-list setup in general, the vast majority do not specialize in author lists. In addition, your point of contact at these companies likely won't be its president, or a #1 bestselling author.
